Horseshoe Bend is the name for a horseshoe-shaped meander of the Colorado River located near the town of Page, Arizona, in the United States.
Horseshoe Bend is located 5 miles (8.0 km) downstream from the Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell within Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, about 4 miles (6.4 km) southwest of Page.
It is accessible via a 1.1 miles (1.8 km) hike from U.S. Route 89 but an access road does reach the geological structure as it is part of a state park. The Horseshoe Bend can be viewed from the steep cliff above.
According to Google terrain maps, the overlook is 4,200 feet (1,300 m) above sea level and the Colorado River is at 3,200 feet (980 m) above sea level making it a 1,000 feet (300 m) drop.

Colorado Plateau
The Colorado Plateau, also known as the Colorado Plateau Province, is a physiographic region of the Intermontane Plateaus, roughly centered on the Four Corners region of the southwestern United States. The province covers an area of 337,000 km2 (130,000 mi2) within western Colorado, northwestern New Mexico, southern and eastern Utah, and northern Arizona. About 90% of the area is drained by the Colorado River and its main tributaries: the Green, San Juan, and Little Colorado.[1][2]
The Colorado Plateau is largely made up of high desert, with scattered areas of forests. In the southwest corner of the Colorado Plateau lies the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River. Much of the Plateau's landscape is related, in both appearance and geologic history, to the Grand Canyon. The nickname "Red Rock Country" suggests the brightly colored rock left bare to the view by dryness and erosion. Domes, hoodoos, fins, reefs, goblins, river narrows, natural bridges, and slot canyons are only some of the additional features typical of the Plateau.
The Colorado Plateau has the greatest concentration of U.S. National Park Service (NPS) units in the country. Among its ten National Parks are Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Canyonlands, Arches, Mesa Verde, and Petrified Forest. Among its 17 National Monuments are Dinosaur, Hovenweep, Wupatki, Sunset Crater Volcano, Grand Staircase-Escalante, Natural Bridges, Canyons of the Ancients, and Colorado.

Hi Lucinda; every time I come across your SUPERB image here I stop in amazement and awe. I managed to go there just a couple of months ago, and I think I managed to capture a few images of Horseshoe Bend, but not as magnificent as this one. When they say it is all about the light, that's absolutely what it is. I don't think that timing was on my side. If you want, you can check my images of this location and tell me honestly what you think. I'm thinking of going back to that area specifically for this shot (and it's getting pretty expensive - LOL). I LOVE this. Did I say that before? LOL
Lucinda Walter replied:
Hany, I'm so glad you came back to see this work and leave your wonderful comments... also I headed over to your gallery to see all your gorgeous work! Thanks my friend! PS - stop by anytime :)

How the heck did I ever miss this beauty of a location and a photograph??? If I ever go back to Page it will be specifically for this location. Awesome capture Lucinda with great lighting and superb composition. A definite favorite. What time of the day was it when you shot this??
Lucinda Walter replied:
Hi Hany, this location is right outside of Page, south of the city. I think this was shot around 5 pm or so, early September. Sun was low and almost setting behind the mountains in the background to the left. Get there! It is worth the time!
